So I Didn't Go to Baltimore...

Hey, everyone, and Happy Tuesday! I know last week, I told you that I'd be going to Baltimore over the weekend with my friend Anna for a friend's birthday party. Well... that didn't happen!

On Thursday night, Anna and I looked at the weather, and at that point, it looked like Hurricane Joaquin was headed straight up the east coast and for Baltimore. We decided not to risk it as many states were already in a state of emergency. Instead, we stayed home and had a mini staycation with Anna's mom.

On Friday night, we went to a local church flea market and the Pittsburgh Glass Center, where they were doing free demonstrations for the public. I had never been to the Glass Center, but my mom always shows me the interesting things that they post on their Facebook page.

It was pretty cool. When we first walked in, a little shop was set up with the different artists' work that was available for purchase. (Spoiler alert: I'm kind of kicking myself for not buying one of the adorable glass pumpkins that they had for sale.)

When we turned the corner, we saw an artist doing work with a small flame. It turns out that he is a small glass artist, so he specializes in making small pieces. He had a few pairs of earrings on display, but he also had an adorable glass bumblebee that he'd made on display. We watched him work the glass and eventually make a colored glass tube that he'll be able to use in future pieces. From the black and white tube, he made a marble. I never knew how much work went into making marbles, but it was awesome to watch.

After he'd finished making the marble, Anna, Anna's mom, and I went upstairs. They were demonstrating glass blowing up there, and it was very crowded. We had to jump and crouch to see, but eventually I got a decent view. The artists were making the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the Ghostbusters movies. While we missed a lot of the demonstration, we got to see them work with the hands, hat, and head. Once again, it was just something that I can't believe I saw, and I just can't believe how much work went into the glass figure.

The night ended with a glorious Buffalo chicken salad from Eat N Park!

On Sunday, Anna and I hung out with her mom again. This time we went to The National Aviary. They were offering free admission, so we had to wait around during the day, but if it's free, it's for me.

I hadn't been to the National Aviary since I was a toddler, so I don't remember much of it. I do know that they've put a lot of work into the buildings and that there are now a lot more birds there than there were in the past.

It took about an hour to walk around and look at all the birds. By the time we got to the bald eagle (the last bird), we decided that we wanted to go back and get a better look at the African penguins and some of the other eagles that had on display inside. I took a ton of pictures while we were there, and many of them are already on my Instagram. (I'll probably be uploading more today). But here are a few of my favorite pictures from the National Aviary:
