Mini Review: "Krampuslauf"

So with there being twelve different stories by twelve different authors in this anthology, it was more than a little likely that I wouldn't like all of the stories. There was even a chance that I wouldn't like one so much that I'd just have to stop reading and move on. "Krampuslauf" by Holly Black was that story for me. I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

I was not a fan of Ms. Black's writing style. It's very choppy throughout what I read, and she lacks the vivid details. It was almost as if she set out to write a story and never really finished thinking everything out before she took her fingers to her keyboard.

The holiday traditions in "Krampuslauf" were not clear to me while I was reading. I couldn't figure out what was going on in the story, and it really aggravated me. I was not able to see where she was taking things, so I just stopped reading before I became too annoyed.

"Krampuslauf" is the oddball story for me. I didn't enjoy it. It's just one of those stories that probably would have done better in a different anthology.

Holly Black is the author of bestselling contemporary fantasy books for kids and teens. She has been a finalist for the Mythopoeic Award, a finalist for an Eisner Award, and the recipient of both an Andre Norton Award and a Newbery Honor. She lives in New England with her husband and son in a house with a secret door.
